"description": "Jeff Kubiak sits down with Dr. Sara Stone, Superintendent of Albany Unified School District in California's East Bay, to discuss what it takes to lead meaningful change while building trust with a school community. With 32 years in education, Sara reflects on her journey from classroom teacher to superintendent and the lessons she has learned about leadership, collaboration, and putting students first. The conversation explores Albany Unified's $63.8 million Measure L bond, which passed with 72% voter approval, and how the district is approaching facility upgrades, wildfire resilience, HVAC improvements, and modernized learning environments. Sara discusses the importance of community engagement, making difficult decisions when funding cannot cover every need, and ensuring that student and family voices help shape the process. She also reflects on the challenges of her first year as a superintendent, the unique experiences of women in educational leadership, and why leaders need to slow down, build relationships, and bring people along rather than rushing to implement change. Key Takeaways: Build relationships before pushing for change Effective leadership starts with listening, understanding the community, and building trust. Leaders need to create shared understanding before moving forward with their ideas. Slow down and bring people along Even when leaders see a problem clearly, meaningful change takes time. Sara reflects on learning to question her assumptions, remain open to other perspectives, and work collaboratively rather than rushing toward solutions. Student-centered leadership means knowing every child Schools need to understand each student's strengths, needs, and experiences. Looking beyond overall performance data helps leaders identify who is being served well and who needs more support. Community trust shapes long-term investment Albany's Measure L bond passed with 72% approval, supporting investment in school facilities. Sara explains how surveys, town halls, and ongoing conversations helped the district understand community priorities and plan for its facilities needs. Leadership requires support and the willingness to listen The superintendency can be an isolating role, and even experienced educators face a learning curve. Sara shares the value of connecting with fellow superintendents, leaning on mentors, and recognizing that leaders do not have to navigate every challenge alone. About Dr. Sara Stone: Sara Stone is the Superintendent of Albany Unified School District and received her doctorate through UC Berkeley's Leaders for Equity and Democracy program. With 32 years in education, she has dedicated her career to creating equitable, inclusive, and joyful learning environments where all students can thrive. Sara began her career as a teacher in Redwood City before serving as a founding principal in Oakland, a principal in both Oakland and Boston, and later as Network Superintendent in Oakland. Her leadership experience also includes serving as Chief Academic Officer in Alameda, Vice President of Teaching and Learning at Chabot Space & Science Center, and Assistant Superintendent in Ravenswood City School District. She now leads Albany Unified with a focus on equity, rigor, and belonging for every student. "description": "Matt Rogers sits down with Dr. Robert Hunt, Superintendent of Upper Arlington Schools, to explore his experience leading major school facility projects and the district's current $273 million bond initiative for two new middle schools and an early childhood building. Dr. Hunt shares lessons from 16 years as a superintendent, including renovating a 100-year-old historic building in Chagrin Falls, navigating a major facilities referendum in Illinois, and now leading Upper Arlington through a process built around extensive community engagement. The conversation dives into how the district assessed both the physical and educational adequacy of its existing buildings, evaluated 18 different options, and created more than 8,500 community touchpoints through building teams, task forces, town halls, surveys, and direct conversations. Dr. Hunt also discusses designing spaces that can adapt to the future, learning from districts that have already gone through the process, and one of his biggest lessons from an earlier project: even the best-designed space can fall short if staff aren't prepared to use it. Takeaways: Community engagement should shape the solution — Upper Arlington evaluated 18 different options and brought staff, students, and community members into the process rather than starting with a predetermined answer. Design for the future, not just today — School buildings can last 50–70 years, so flexibility needs to be built in to accommodate changes in teaching and learning. You can only move at the speed of trust — Lasting change requires time, support, and trust. People need to understand why a new approach matters before they can fully embrace it. Learn from those who have done it before — Visiting other districts and talking directly with teachers and students can reveal both the benefits and unintended consequences of design decisions. A new space only works if people are ready for it — Dr. Hunt reflects on a past project where he focused heavily on construction but not enough on preparing staff to use the new environment effectively. About Dr. Robert Hunt: Ohio native Robert Hunt, Ph.D., is proud to serve this community as the superintendent of the Upper Arlington Schools. Dr. Hunt joined the district in July 2023 after spending much of his career in high-achieving school districts in Ohio and Illinois. Prior to Upper Arlington, he was the superintendent in Barrington 220 Community Unit School District, northwest of Chicago. Previously, he served as the superintendent of Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, for nine years. During that time, he was named Ohio Superintendent of the Year by the AASA (American Association of School Administrators) in October 2020. Prior to becoming a superintendent, Dr. Hunt served Chagrin Falls Schools in a variety of roles, including assistant superintendent, principal, and assistant principal at the high school. In 2007, he was named the Ohio Principal of the Year by NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Administrators). His career began as a middle school English teacher and athletic director, then eventually assistant principal, in Kenston Local School District in Ohio. He holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Kent State University, a master's degree in educational administration from Ursuline College, and a Ph.D. in educational administration from Kent State University. Dr. Hunt and his family are excited to be Golden Bears. He lives in Upper Arlington with his wife, Shannon, and their two school-age children, Emerson and Hawken. They also have two older children, Ashton and Braden. Dr. Hunt believes that a successful public school is a reflection of the expectations of the community. With that in mind, he believes he has a responsibility to take the time to listen and learn from all stakeholders of the Upper Arlington Schools and then focus on how to continuously improve. "description": "Kevin Stoller sits down with Dr. George Hummer, Superintendent of Frederick County Public Schools, to explore his journey from special education aide to school district leader, and the district's ongoing effort to build its fourth high school. Dr. Hummer shares how his mother's career as a special education teacher and his own experience working with students with disabilities shaped his empathy-driven leadership style. The conversation dives deep into the mechanics of planning new school construction — including the critical difference between \"design capacity\" and \"program capacity,\" how Frederick County builds community trust through transparent data, and why involving every stakeholder voice (parents, teachers, students, county officials) is essential to a successful bond and building process. Dr. Hummer also reflects on team-building, situational leadership drawn from his coaching background, and why investing in students must remain the non-negotiable priority behind every facilities decision. Takeaways: Program capacity vs. design capacity — A room's legal occupancy limit isn't the same as how many students it can actually serve well; specialized programs (special ed, ELL, CTE, kindergarten) mean real capacity is often much lower than code allows. Run schools at 85–90% capacity, not 100% — Like redlining a car engine, operating school buildings at full capacity year-round accelerates wear and leaves no room for enrollment shifts or new programs. There's no such thing as too many voices — Successful school construction requires input from county officials, principals, teachers, parents, and even students — genuine inclusion builds long-term community trust. Seek out your critics, not just your supporters — Dr. Hummer's willingness to sit down with a skeptical taxpayer and address misinformation directly turned an opponent into an advocate for the new high school. Situational leadership matters — Knowing when to encourage versus when to push for improvement (borrowed from his coaching background) is key to building strong, resilient teams. About Dr. George Hummer: Dr. George C. Hummer began serving as Frederick County's Superintendent of Schools on January 30, 2023. He is a native of New Jersey who moved to Virginia in 1994. He graduated from Chancellor High School in Fredericksburg and received a bachelor of arts degree from Radford University in 2005. Dr. Hummer also holds a master's degree in educational leadership and special education from the University of Mary Washington as well as a doctorate in educational leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Hummer credits his mother, who was a lifelong special education teacher, with inspiring him to pursue a career in education. He began his career as a special education teacher, athletic director, and football and basketball coach at Battlefield Middle School in Fredericksburg. After serving in those roles from 2005 to 2012, Dr. Hummer was named assistant principal at Rodney Thompson Middle School in Stafford and served in that capacity for three years. In 2015, Dr. Hummer was named the Supervisor of Student Services and Special Education for Stafford County Public Schools. Four years later, he became Stafford County Public Schools' Executive Director of Student Services and Special Education. In 2022, he was named that school division's Chief Student Support Services Officer. As a teacher, Dr. Hummer was recognized with a Teacher of the Year Award and for improving the performance of his students. As a central office administrator, Dr. Hummer has spent countless hours supporting students, families and staff while working to develop better procedures to help bridge the achievement gap for all students. In 2021, the Virginia Council of Administrators of Special Education recognized Dr. Hummer with the Mary Lou Wall Award for Early Special Education Leadership. The award recognizes individuals who are in their first three years of leading a school division's special education services and exemplify five values: (1) Heart- the passion to serve, nurture and care; (2) Leadership by example; (3) Honesty; (4) Creative thinking; and (5) Collaboration. From 2018 to 2023, Dr. Hummer served as an adjunct professor of educational leadership and education at the University of Mary Washington. He has also been a featured speaker at several state meetings for the Virginia Department of Education. Dr. Hummer is proud to remain actively engaged in the Frederick County and Northern Shenandoah Valley communities. He currently serves on the boards of the Valley Health Foundation, United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, Grafton School Foundation, and Frederick County Education Foundation. He is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Frederick County. Through these meaningful partnerships, Dr. Hummer enthusiastically supportsefforts that strengthen our students, education, health, opportunity, and overall community well-being throughout the region. Dr. Hummer, his wife, Charnell, and his step-daughter, Madison, live in Frederick County. "description": "Dr. Adam Swinyard, Superintendent of Spokane Public Schools and 2023 Washington Superintendent of the Year, joins the Jeff Kubiak to discuss leading one of Washington's largest districts through a rapidly shifting information and mental health landscape. Adam shares how Spokane centers everything on relationships, why transparency and \"doors and windows\" communication have replaced the old top-down model, and how the district's Engage in Real Life initiative and revised cell phone policy are tackling the youth mental health crisis. He also reflects candidly on lessons learned since becoming superintendent — from the power of emotional intelligence in hiring to rethinking public schools' role in a world where they no longer hold a monopoly on enrollment. Takeaways: Relationships over hierarchy — Spokane's culture is built on entering every interaction with love, kindness, and curiosity before power or authority. Transparency builds trust — Post-pandemic, families expect \"doors and windows\" into classrooms; hiding information only invites misinformation. Emotional intelligence trumps résumés — Adam prioritizes EQ over traditional credentials when hiring leaders, even for technical roles like HR. Engage in Real Life to fight the mental health crisis — Pairing a cell phone policy with real-world clubs, sports, and activities has driven major gains in attendance and behavior. Schools no longer have a monopoly — With school choice now widespread, districts must develop real marketing and branding strategies, like higher ed already does. About Dr. Adam Swinyard: The Spokane Public Schools board of directors named Dr. Adam Swinyard superintendent in the summer of 2020. In his role as superintendent for the state's largest school districts, Dr. Swinyard is tasked with implementing the district's vision, goals and policies. Dr. Swinyard previously served as the district's associate superintendent for teaching and learning and director of secondary schools. A native of Deer Park, Wash., Dr. Swinyard earned his B.A. in secondary education from Northwest University. He earned his M.Ed, Ed.D in executive leadership, and Washington State Principal and Superintendent credentials from Seattle Pacific University. In 2016, Dr. Swinyard received the Research on Superintendency Dissertation of the Year Award from the American Educational Research Association. Prior to working in district administration, Dr. Swinyard was the principal at Sacajawea Middle School in Spokane from 2013 – 2016. In that role, he was twice nominated for the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) Washington State Middle School Principal of the Year Award. He was an AWSP Regional Principal of the Year winner in 2015. Prior to his time leading Sacajawea, Dr. Swinyard was an assistant principal at Cheney High School in Cheney, Wash., and principal assistant at Garry Middle School in Spokane. Dr. Swinyard has teaching experience in health and fitness, language arts and social studies in western Washington school districts that include Glacier Peak High School in the Snohomish School District, and McAuliffe Elementary School in Redmond. Dr. Swinyard and his wife have three children. "description": "Dr. Sharon Bradley, founder of Bradley Site Design and a landscape architect with four decades of experience, joins Matt Rogers to explore how school campuses can become powerful teaching tools rather than just backdrops. Sharon shares how her childhood in the English countryside shaped her belief in \"environment as teacher,\" and explains her curriculum integration model — mapping specific lesson units directly onto campus features like whisper walls, bioretention gardens, and stormwater \"raindrop journeys.\" She also discusses how early collaboration between landscape architects, building architects, and educators leads to campuses that are both cost-effective and deeply engaging for students and communities. Takeaways: Environment as teacher — Childhood immersion in nature shaped Sharon's belief that outdoor spaces can teach as powerfully as classrooms. Curriculum drives design — Mapping existing lesson units onto campus features makes outdoor learning easy for teachers to adopt. Necessity sparks creativity — Required elements like retaining walls and stormwater systems can double as engaging teaching tools (e.g., \"whisper walls\"). Bring landscape architects in early — Involving them from the start, not as an afterthought, leads to better-integrated, more functional campuses. Natural design saves money — Native plantings and bioretention areas cut irrigation and maintenance costs while boosting engagement. About Dr. Sharon Bradley: Through her practice and her research, Sharon has developed a unique design methodology that addresses social, economic, and ecological issues on educational campuses and in residential communities. With 40 years of experience creating immersive learning landscapes, her Curriculum Integration techniques and impact assessment frameworks have become models for campus design. Her unique approach results in sites that invite exploration and discovery, with elements created for specific learning units and general biophilic engagement. "description": "Mark Shepard, K-12 Advisor at BVH Architecture, joins Carla Cummins to share his unusual path from industrial tech teacher to school superintendent to architectural firm advisor. Drawing on his experience leading a transformative CTE center project in Fremont, Nebraska, Mark discusses how listening to local industry and students — not just assumptions from educators — reshaped a district's approach to career and technical education. He dives into the design choices that put CTE on display rather than hidden away, the partnerships with local businesses that created real jobs for students, and why treating career pathways as \"a means to a beginning\" changes everything about how schools serve students. Takeaways: Ask industry, don't assume — Visiting 42 local businesses revealed a mismatch between what schools were teaching and what employers actually needed. Design CTE to be seen — Moving shop class from a hidden corner to the school's central crossroads, with glass walls, reshaped how students and parents viewed trade careers. A means to a beginning, not an end — Career pathways should launch students into real opportunity, not serve as a fallback from a four-year degree. Flexibility future-proofs facilities — Durable, adaptable labs let schools retool programs as local industry needs evolve. Student success stories build momentum — Real outcomes (jobs, scholarships, even a student following his father into the trades) generate community buy-in for future investment. About Mark Shepard: Mark brings over 35 years of experience in education, school planning, and facility development, most recently serving as the Superintendent of Fremont Public Schools. His career highlights include leading a $123M bond initiative (yes, $123 million), which resulted in three new elementary schools and a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center. With his extensive experience in education and expertise in CTE design, Mark Shepard brings valuable insights that help us enhance and innovate our programs. As a K-12 Advisor, Mark works closely with us to provide strategic guidance in designing and refining curriculum and educational initiatives that align with current industry trends and educational standards. "description": "Matt Wark, Chief Facilities Officer for Forsyth County Schools, joins Katie Jubenville to share his unconventional path from a struggling student written off by his own guidance counselor to leading facilities for one of Georgia's fastest-growing, top-performing school districts. Matt discusses how his personal journey through teaching, administration, and district leadership shapes his \"houses, not buildings\" philosophy of facilities management, and dives into how Forsyth balances explosive growth with maintenance, community trust, and cost. He also shares his perspective as president of the Georgia 4LE chapter on building stronger partnerships between school districts and industry vendors statewide. Takeaways: A rough start built a mission — Written off as a student, Matt now champions paths for every kid, not just test scores. Facilities are \"houses,\" not buildings — Treating schools like home builds pride for students and staff alike. Growth means balance — Forsyth is shifting from new construction to upgrading older schools' infrastructure. Patience over quick fixes — Matt's top advice: slow down, since fast decisions create new problems. Partnerships over contracts — As Georgia 4LE president, Matt connects districts and vendors through trust, not transactions. About Matt Wark: He is currently the Chief Facilities Officer for Forsyth County Schools. He is married to Sara Wark who works in Atlanta at the Coca Cola headquarters and they have 4 children (Mason, Riley, Jordan and Bailey) ages 13,11,10,8. He is originally from southwest Michigan where he grew up on a family-owned farm. He moved to Georgia in 2003 and became a teacher with Fulton County Schools. He taught 2nd grade and 5th grade including special education. He then moved to Clarke County Schools to become an assistant principal. There met his wife and relocated back to north Georgia and was an assistant principal with Dawson County Schools. While working in Dawson County he was promoted to the position of Principal. After 5 years of working in Dawson County he was called to become the Director of Assessment and Accountability with Baldwin County School District in Milledgeville, Ga. After 2 years in Baldwin County, he was promoted to Deputy Superintendent. As his family grew and his wife continued traveling to Atlanta daily, he decided to move back to the Atlanta area and what better place than north Ga. Matt successfully became the Chief Facilities Officer for Forsyth County Schools and also lives in Forsyth County where all 4 of his children attend Forsyth County Schools. In Matt's current role, he oversees all maintenance and facilities needs for the district. This includes all new construction, renovations, modifications, general maintenance, custodial, grounds maintenance as well as, all future planning for the school district. Currently Matt oversees over 9 million square feet which includes 53 total buildings with more schools to come in the near future. Forsyth County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Georgia and has no signs of slowing down. "description": "In this episode, Jeff Kubiak talks with Jennifer Gibb, Vice President of Business Development at Van Pelt Construction Services, about turning school bond measures into real buildings. With 20+ years spanning district facilities leadership, bond program management, and consulting, Jen shares how districts navigate tight budgets, layered funding sources, and community skepticism to deliver modern learning environments. The conversation dives into strategic bond planning, the real story behind fast-tracked construction after a razor-thin bond vote, balancing capital projects against general fund crises, and designing flexible \"good bones\" buildings that age well. Takeaways: Passing a bond is step one, not the finish line. Districts must keep planning and lining up alternative funding even before — and especially after — a bond vote. Speed protects value. Construction dollars depreciate the moment a bond passes, so moving fast (shovel-ready design/permitting) stretches every dollar further. Facilities and general fund health are linked. Big bond programs can mask general fund struggles — spending on buildings while cutting staff requires careful, honest community messaging. \"Good bones\" beat trendy design. Flexible layouts, strong lighting/HVAC, and updatable furniture keep buildings relevant for decades without full rebuilds. Radically student-centered means every action counts. From ribbon-cuttings to picking up trash, small contributions to a school environment build pride and lasting impact. About Jennifer Gibb: Jennifer Gibb is the Vice President of Business Development at Van Pelt Construction Services, where she helps California PK–14 educational institutions turn vision into reality through strategic planning, funding, and program management. With more than 20 years of experience in educational facilities, Jennifer is passionate about building strong partnerships, creating innovative solutions, and helping communities deliver exceptional learning environments. A recognized leader in the education facilities industry, she is equally committed to mentoring others, giving back to her community, and leading with purpose. Outside of work, Jennifer is a wife, a proud mom of two, and an advocate for making a lasting difference for students and the communities they serve. "description": "Jeff Kubiak sits down with Orin Williams, Assistant Superintendent of Facilities, Planning, and Development at Riverside Unified School District, to unpack a 33-year career in school facilities planning. Orin traces his path from architecture school at Cal Poly Pomona through private practice into public education facilities, sharing how his design background shapes his advocacy for thoughtful, human-centered school environments. The conversation covers turning aging campuses into cohesive learning spaces, building community trust around bond projects, balancing tight budgets against big ambitions, and weaving \"gamified\" learning (like the fractions-based basketball game \"Fraction Ball\") directly into campus design. Orin also reflects on an unplanned detour into maintenance leadership, the emotional weight communities carry around legacy schools, and what keeps him hopeful about the future of public education. Takeaways: Great architecture needs a great client. Districts get better schools when they advocate for design excellence, not just function. Trust comes from transparency. Honest communication turns skeptics into supporters — don't overpromise. Every space can teach. Gamified hallways, playgrounds, and murals turn campuses into learning tools. Change is emotional. Treat community pushback like grief — validate feelings before presenting facts. Cross-training builds better leaders. Experience across design, construction, and maintenance fosters collaboration over rivalry. About Orin Williams: With more than 33 years of experience dedicated to public education via capital facilities planning, construction, and maintenance, Orin Williams has led several major capital bond programs totaling over $2.9 billion. Currently, Orin serves as Assistant Superintendent, Facilities, Planning & Development for the Riverside Unified School District - the 15th largest school district in California. Previously serving for 8 years as Assistant Superintendent, Facilities & Governmental Relations for the Santa Ana Unified School District, Mr. Williams' span of responsibility included leading the Planning & Design, Construction, and Maintenance & Operations departments with teams totaling over 260. Similarly, Orin serving for over 4 years as Associate Vice Chancellor, Facilities, Planning & Development for the Riverside Community College District, Orin led a $800 million bond program developing numerous projects at the District's three colleges and various education centers. Additionally, Mr. Williams served the Riverside Unified School District twice previously as Director of Facilities, and later as Director of M&O for a total of over 17 years. Lastly, Orin served as Facilities Planner for the Pomona Unified School District for 2 years. Williams holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, was an Engineering major at U.C. Riverside, and holds numerous professional certifications. Orin served as President of the Southern California Chapter and member of the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE), and member of Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH), and School Energy Coalition (SEC), and serves as a workshop panel member as well as served on various committees within these educational facility-focused organizations. In 2022, Orin received the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators (CALSA) State Classified Employee of the Year award. Andrew shares his winding path from youth ministry to law enforcement, teaching, and school administration before landing in his current role. The conversation dives deep into the district's new Sunset Park Elementary School project — a $336 million, 10-year facilities initiative — covering CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), hardwired access control, AI-powered cameras, generator-backed security systems, and pod-style learning layouts. Andrew emphasizes collaborative decision-making, visiting other campuses, and balancing beautiful, light-filled learning environments with rigorous safety standards. He closes with his guiding philosophy: prepare and plan rather than simply hope and pray, all in service of keeping students and staff safe. Takeaways: Safety is built in from day one, not added later. School security now covers access control, cameras, communications, and weather alerts. Critical systems run on backup power to stay functional during outages. Campus tours and community input shaped the new pod-style school design. Proven, practical solutions beat flashy tech — \"prep and plan,\" not \"hope and pray.\" Episode 347 of the Better Learning Podcast For more information on our partners: Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) - https://www.a4le.org/ Education Leaders' Organization - https://www.ed-leaders.org/ Second Class Foundation - https://secondclassfoundation.org/ EDmarket - https://www.edmarket.org/ Catapult @ Penn GSE - https://catapult.gse.upenn.edu/ Want to be a Guest Speaker? "description": "In this episode, Jeff Kubiak talks with Dr. Amy Alzina, superintendent of Cold Spring School District, about running a high-performing small school district in Santa Barbara County. They cover the mission of the Small School Districts Association, building genuine student connection beyond the classroom, designing flexible and indoor/outdoor learning spaces, funding strategies and community trust, and career advice for aspiring school business officials. The conversation closes on emerging school finance trends, concerns over new leave legislation's impact on students, and cautious optimism about AI's role in personalized education. Takeaways: Small districts, big impact: SSDA represents 60% of California's school districts, advocating for local control and equitable funding for schools with 2,500 students or fewer. Every student needs three advocates: Educators should intentionally connect with students outside their own classroom, not just their assigned group. Flexible spaces drive engagement: Barn doors, couches, wobble seats, and outdoor courtyards let students choose how and where they learn best. Trust and transparency fuel community investment: Strong test scores, low absenteeism, and visible results (like plaques for donors) build the community support that funds specialist programs. New leave policy risks instructional continuity: The 14-week pregnancy leave combined with a 30-day cap on long-term subs could mean a revolving door of teachers for young students learning foundational skills like reading. About Dr. Amy Alzina: Dr. Amy Alzina is a trailblazer in TK–12 education and a leading voice in the integration of artificial intelligence across California school systems. As the Chair of ACSA's Artificial Intelligence Task Force and a board member for both the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) and the Small School Districts' Association (SSDA), Dr. Alzina plays a pivotal role in shaping statewide AI policy and practice as chair of the SSDA Legislative and Policy Committee. In addition to serving as Superintendent of Cold Spring School District, one of the top academically performing school districts in the state of California, Dr. Alzina supports districts statewide in implementing AI tools that increase efficiency, personalize learning, and enhance productivity. Under her leadership, Cold Spring has earned a reputation not only for excellence in innovation but also for maintaining the highest standards in student achievement. Prior to her current role, Dr. Alzina served in Santa Barbara Unified School District as Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education and as Principal of Adams Elementary School, an ESSA Distinguished School recognized as one of the Top 100 Title I Schools in the nation. "description": "In this episode, host Matt Rogers and co-host Dr. Brian McCraw talk with Shara Bumgarner, cofounder of Houston's Joy School, and architect Janann Pittman of Jackson & Ryan Architects about creating a K-8 school built for kids with learning differences. From the school's humble start with four students in 1997 to its thoughtfully designed campus today, Shara and Janann unpack how intentional design - down to door handles and bathroom stalls - can turn a school into a true second home. They dig into individualized instruction, the \"it depends\" philosophy, and why joy, not just remediation, should be at the heart of every learning space. Takeaways: No one-size-fits-all - Kids are grouped by specific learning needs, not grade level or diagnosis. Design follows philosophy - Spaces are built around flexibility and the school's culture, not just function. Details matter - Even door handles and toilet flushes were chosen to ease student anxiety. Safety enables learning - An anxious brain can't learn, so comfort comes first for kids and parents alike. Joy beats survival - Disco balls and dance parties aren't extras - they're core to helping kids truly thrive. About Shara Bumgarner: Shara Bumgarner co-founded The Joy School in 1997 and has been our Head of School since 2002. Shara's inspiration for starting The Joy School stemmed from witnessing bright students with learning differences and disabilities slip through the cracks in public school because of a lack of understanding of such students. Shara is committed to providing the most optimal, joyful environment for students and teachers with an emphasis on embracing individual differences. Starting The Joy School changed her life as an educator, and she hopes to have that same impact on each student, parent and teacher at the School. Outside of school, Shara focuses on her family, which includes her supportive husband and three daughters. As a Principal with Jackson & Ryan Architects, Janann is licensed in multiple states, with education projects from Pennsylvania to Texas. Janann seeks to understand her unique clients and their communities, so her designs reflect them and serve them in highly personal ways. Janann comes from a family of educators and has served on numerous PTO boards and committees for her sons' schools, on the Rice University Alumni Board, and was a founding board member of Books Between Kids. While Janann loved her time at Rice University, she is most enthusiastic about her middle school years at Shoreham-Wading River Middle School. Named a Blue Ribbon School the first year the award was given, Janann loved the fabulous arts and community service programs, and the focus on interdisciplinary projects, in smaller neighborhood communities. "description": "In this episode, Dr. Sabba Quidwai, CEO of Designing Schools, joins the Better Learning Podcast to explore how educators, students, and communities can navigate AI with hope instead of fear. Drawing on her own path from history teacher to Apple to education consultant, she shares how districts like Roseville Joint Union High School District are bringing students, staff, and community members together to co-design AI-era graduate profiles — and why courageous leadership, shared culture, and storytelling matter more than any specific technology. Takeaways: Hope is a teachable skill, not just a feeling — and it's the root of agency. Design with people, not for them — Roseville built a graduate profile in just three sessions by including students, staff, and community. Culture and story precede innovation — courageous leadership matters more than any specific tool. Students need shared context, not just a voice, or they'll default to asking for rigid rules. Local business partnerships make AI literacy real and practical without big budgets. "description": "In this episode of the Better Learning Podcast, host Jessica Westerduin talks with Amanda Vottis, an architectural designer at Mosaic Architects with over 12 years of experience in K-12 educational design. Amanda shares her winding path into school architecture, her philosophy of \"radically student-centered\" design, and a deep dive into the multi-year Saratoga Springs School District project — a \"legacy\" renovation initiative built on an educational plan shaped by community input, teacher feedback, and student voice. The conversation explores how thoughtful design (learning stairs, breakout spaces, informal student areas) can transform how kids feel about school, and why understanding student behavior and needs matters more than just filling classroom walls. Takeaways: Design starts with people, not walls. Instead of asking \"what does this classroom need,\" Amanda asks \"what do your students need to be successful\" — shifting conversations from storage and outlets to real student experience. Community alignment sustains long-term projects. Saratoga Springs' educational plan, built through summits, surveys, and teacher/student input, has guided nearly a decade of phased renovations back to a shared vision. Dream big before scaling back. Exposing districts to ambitious ideas (like learning stairs and dedicated informal spaces) helps them aim higher instead of defaulting to \"practical\" but uninspired designs. Every student learns differently — design should reflect that. Just as teachers and coaches adapt to different learning styles, school spaces need variety to support how each student thrives. Ownership and pride change student behavior. When students feel a space belongs to them, they take care of it and use it — evidenced by the pride shown in Saratoga's new fitness center and cafeteria. About Amanda Vottis: Amanda is an Architectural Designer and Accredited Learning Environment Planner with Mosaic Associates Architects. With over a decade of experience, Amanda specializes in designing innovative learning environments for K-12 public schools, colleges, and universities in New York. Collaborating with clients from initial project conception through completion of construction, Amanda enjoys helping clients design projects that align with their unique educational goals and community needs. Amanda volunteers for the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) New York Chapter Board, serving as past President, and co-captain for Mosaic's CANstruction team. "description": "In this episode, Jeff Kubiak sits down with Dr. Heather Sánchez, Deputy Superintendent of the Bellevue School District in Washington, to explore what it looks like to lead a large public school district from both the instructional and operational sides of the house. Drawing on 26 years in education — from a border-town middle school teacher in New Mexico to overseeing HR, finance, facilities, transportation, and more — Dr. Sánchez shares how Bellevue is centering community voice in everything from strategic planning to building design, and why the most transformative ideas often start with a simple \"what if?\" Takeaways: Walk both sides of the house. Coming from instruction into operations gives Dr. Sánchez a rare ability to connect learning directly to logistics. Listen before you build. The best designs — buildings, programs, strategic plans — start with community voice, not a blueprint. Systemize the fires so you can dream. Clear crisis protocols free up the mental space leaders need for long-term vision. Small ideas, big impact. The Bellevue Welcome Center started with one hallway conversation. Transformation often does. The students are already ahead of us. They're bolder, more creative, and more advocacy-minded than ever. Follow their lead. About Dr. Heather Sánchez: Dr. Heather J. Sánchez is a high-impact and systems-focused K–12 executive known for delivering measurable academic results while leading complex organizations with precision, clarity, and vision. With more than 20 years of experience leading high-performing school systems, she strengthens academic outcomes, ensures operational excellence, and expands access to innovative learning opportunities. In her role as Deputy Superintendent, she provides executive leadership across district operations, human resources, and finance and business services, aligning organizational strategy, talent, and resources to deliver on the district's strategic plan and drive measurable results for students. Dr. Sánchez oversees a comprehensive portfolio that includes financial stewardship, human capital strategy, facilities and capital programs, student services, and enterprise operations. She is recognized for her ability to integrate long-range planning, fiscal discipline, and organizational effectiveness with a clear focus on teaching and learning. Her leadership ensures that budgets, staffing models, and operational systems are tightly aligned to district priorities, enabling schools to deliver high-quality instruction and strong student outcomes. Previously serving as Chief of Schools and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Sánchez led districtwide improvement efforts that resulted in measurable gains in early literacy and mathematics, while strengthening instructional coherence and expanding access to accelerated learning, dual language programs, STEM opportunities, and student choice. She has a strong track record of advancing innovation and ensuring systems evolve to meet the diverse needs and aspirations of students and families. Across leadership roles in Washington, Colorado, and New Mexico, Dr. Sánchez brings a rare combination of financial acumen, business-minded leadership, and deep educational expertise. She has served at every level of the PK–12 system, including classroom teacher, instructional coach, school principal, Director of Teaching and Learning and Accelerated Programs, Executive Director of Schools, Chief of Schools, Chief Operating Officer, and now Deputy Superintendent, gaining experience across elementary, middle, high school, and district systems levels. Grounded in this comprehensive background, she maintains a strong commitment to students, families, and educators, prioritizing clarity, communication, and a supportive, high-expectations culture. She is known for building trust with boards and communities, navigating complex challenges with sound judgment, and delivering results through disciplined execution. Dr. Sánchez holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy, a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership, superintendent certification, and principal and teacher certifications. She has been nationally recognized through Chiefs for Change (Future Chiefs) and Women Leading Ed (Emerging State Executives). Her honors include the Washington Association of School Administrators Doyle E. Winter Excellence in Leadership Award and the Washington State School Achievement Award. Originally from New Mexico, Dr. Sánchez is committed to academic excellence, responsible governance, and future-ready systems that prepare every student for success in college, career, and life. "description": "Mark Barga talks with Larry Levato, veteran educational architect at Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates, about what it really takes to design schools that serve students, teachers, and communities alike — and why the process matters as much as the product. Takeaways: Design for teachers too. Educators spend more time in school buildings than students. Great design treats teaching as a craft that deserves a professional environment. Listen before you design. Client relationships and deep listening are the foundation of every successful project — not design vision alone. Slow down to get it right. Larry's biggest \"risk\" was pushing back a project timeline. When COVID hit mid-construction, that decision saved the project. Schools can lead change, not just reflect it. Even traditional communities can be guided toward more innovative learning environments when trust is built over time. Legacy is about people, not buildings. Larry measures success by how much he's elevated the architects, clients, and educators around him — not by square footage or awards. About Larry Levato: Earning a Bachelor of Architecture and Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design in 1988, Larry has worked with K-12 educational clients over the course of his 34 year career. He joined Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates in 2010 and continues to work with our K-12 educational clients throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania. Larry is the current A4LE President-elect, appointing committee positions and focusing on the creation of a stellar conference which include host city selection, school building tours and keynote speakers as well as conference theme. As Principal, he focuses on overall firm management as well as collaboration with project managers in establishing project standards and Best Practices as well as advising on educational programming and planning which are implemented throughout the architectural studio. "description": "In this episode of the Better Learning Podcast, host Jessica Westerduin sits down with James Liebman, senior associate at HMFH Architects, to explore how thoughtful school design can elevate student wellbeing, foster belonging, and support great teaching. Drawing on 30 years in architecture — from higher education to K–12 — James shares how the physical environment either supports or hinders learning, and how architects can create spaces that truly center students. Using the Maria Weston Chapman Middle School in Weymouth, Massachusetts as a case study, James walks through the design decisions that shaped one of the largest middle schools in the state into a place where students feel seen, supported, and inspired. Takeaways: Student-centered design starts with listening. Every design decision — from natural light to furniture flexibility — should trace back to how students will actually use and experience the space. Architects must ask questions, sit with uncertainty, and let what they hear shape the design. Break large schools into smaller communities. The \"concentric rings of support\" strategy used at Maria Weston Chapman Middle School shows how architecture can combat the anxiety of scale by creating nested communities — from a team of ~100 students up to a grade, and then the whole school. Early visioning documents anchor every future decision. A district-wide educational plan created at the start of the process serves as a reference point throughout design, ensuring that smaller decisions continue to reinforce the bigger goals — and giving districts a durable consensus to build on. Architecture supports behavior; it doesn't create it. Great teaching and learning are already happening. Well-designed spaces — with good acoustics, natural light, adaptable technology, and flexible furniture — don't manufacture engagement, they remove barriers to it. Adaptability and budget are not opposites. Long-lasting schools require flexible spaces, but that doesn't mean endless square footage. Smart sequencing of spaces, movable furniture, and robust materials can create adaptable environments without exceeding budgets or losing funding votes. About James Liebman: James Liebman is a Senior Associate at HMFH Architects, a women-owned architecture firm nationally recognized for innovative, sustainable, and student-centered school design. With 29 years of experience, James skillfully balances stakeholder input, public budgets, and accelerated schedules to deliver K-12 schools that enhance student well-being and reflect the communities they serve. As Project Manager for the LEED Gold-certified Chapman Middle School, he led design and construction administration for this 1,470-student facility, the largest middle school in Massachusetts. James earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia and his Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.
